Fuzzy Web-based Visualisation / Inference

Fuzzy methods are now one of the three main pillars of Computational Intelligence. The aim of this project is to create web-based software to either:

  1. allow the visualisation of various types of fuzzy sets including type-2 fuzzy sets (which will require 3D visualistion);
  2. allow the online configuration of fuzzy inference systems.

Currently a cloud-based platform for this exists which can be extended further, for example in order to provide cloud-servives such as the rendering of fuzzy sets on request.

Dynamic Remote Guidance System for Mobile Robotics

The project revolves around designing and developing a PC-based software component which enables the emission of signals that in turn control the behaviour of one or more mobile robots. The software could be browser-based but this is not a requirement. If you are interested in this project, please contact me directly for more details.

Using technology to capture, process and evaluate functional outcomes in sarcoma patients.

A collaborative project with the Nottingham University Hospital with a focus on evaluating the functional outcomes following sarcoma treatment, i.e. long term quality of life.

The project revolves around building on an existing platform for the digital capture of survey information which is based on standardized paper based questionnaires. The current system uses NHS approved hardware, including a tablet and workstation(s) which allow patients to complete questionnaires digitally during their regular check-ups and to subsequently store and query the provided information.

The project itself can be adjusted according to the student’s interest but should focus on refining the user interaction and/or the evaluation and visualisation of the resulting data. The work can also include extensions to non-numeric (interval-based) rating systems which will allow patients to express uncertainty about their replies to specific questions.

Deriving Information from Thermal Imagery

The project revolves around capturing video/images from a thermal camera and evaluating the resulting data. Specifically, a framework will be built based on existing tools and hardware to interpret information gathered from filing human participants. As thermal imagery is quite different to normal visual-spectrum imagery, the interpretation of the data will focus on specific aspects of the captured images.

The potential participant should be happy to autonomously work with existing hardware which may require effort in getting it set up and working. The work itself is flexible to suit student interests and may focus on data analysis and running experiments with human participants.

Manipulation of virtual 3D objects

The project revolves around designing and implementing software that employs existing hardware in order to manipulate 3D objects. In particular, the project will focus on the manipulation of 3D general type-2 fuzzy sets but other objects are also an option.
