Qualifying Year Initiatives
Below are a series of initiates I've initiated and/or co-organised at the University of Nottingham, School of Computer Science, for qualifying year students.
Welcome Curry & Noodles
Teaming up with CompSoc, we've setup a welcome curry and noodles for freshers in week1. Its free food - who wouldnt want that - and we're getting together to hang out in the CS Atrium. Curry and Chinese food provided.
Social Media Scavenger Hunt
Again, with CompSoc, we've designed a social media treasure hunt for freshers to find the most important things in town for the years ahead, including bars, sources of pizza, labs, and more. The clues are in the welcome pack, and all you have to do is tweet a photo of yourself at each location to @uonCSyr1, with the #hunt hashtag and a hashtag of the item number (e.g. #1 - #25).
Guru Programme
Designed to help first years get tips, tricks, and advice from students who are already excelling at their computer science degrees. The Guru programme allows non-final year students to mentor first years with regular meetings, tips, and support. Gurus work alongside Personal Tutors to provide a parallel framework of support and advice. The Guru Programme was designed and is co-organised with Joe Nash - this year's Education Rep for the school.
Student Experience Initiatives
Below are a series of initiates I've started at the University of Nottingham, School of Computer Science, for all students.
Annual Programming Competition
We've begun a new annual programming challenge - this year taking place on the 27th September 2013. Details can be found here. The competition is in the style of the ACM ICPC, and some of the winners will train to take part in the Northwest European regionals.
- Sign up on the event website.
Other Programming Competitions
After our own competition, we are co-hosting UKIEPC on the 5th October 2013. A UK/IE preliminary for the NWERC competition. Teams compete against other teams around the UK. We'll then also take a team to NWERC in November.
Hackathons
In conjunction with HackSoc, we organise a series of hackatons for students all year around. Last year, Samsung also hosted a hackathon in Nottingham, as part of a large annual hackathon series. Look out for them.
Weekly Programming Training
As with last year, we'll be running weekly programming training events for those that want to take part. Like any sport, its a team practice, but in C11 on wednesdays 1pm-5pm.
