Project Title: A Web Page Conversion Tool for Enhanced Usability Student: Neil Williamson Course: BSc Hons Computer Science Abstract: Though created as a method of academic communication and reference, the World Wide Web has since become vastly popular with the general public, and grown into a truly massive library of content. However, poorly thought out and inconsistent document design and structure has led to a large section of this content being difficult or impossible to use for people with particular physical disabilities, particularly visual. The basic aim of this project is to design a produce a tool to improve the usability of web sites with poor legibility for some users. Specifically, the software is designed to manipulate colours in Web pages to help work around poor authoring choices which could render text unreadable. It provides a mechanism for users to simply select a profile of modification, with access to customise it, and a way for administrators to add more profiles to the system. The design is set up to run on a PHP-enabled Apache Web server which users could connect to like other Web server. The software then acts as a kind of proxy for retrieval content from user-specified Web sites and modifying them according to the profile and user-defined customisations.
