Project Title: A System to Help Managers in Workforce Allocation Student: Donna-Marie Moy Course: BSc Hons Computer Science Abstract: The purpose of this project is to take an in-depth look at how scheduling systems work within the rail industry, via a series of case studies and to produce a system which will improve upon the method that is currently in use. The project commences with a case study based upon an interview and communication with a rail worker whose home office is located in Bristol; a hub for engineering at the current time. An analysis of the case study provides an introduction to the rail industry and typical problems faced within, as well as providing an insight into the current need for improvement. Other areas of industry and solutions for similar problems are approached via research and case studies in an attempt to determine if any solution or materials exist that are relevant to the rail industry. In depth research is also attempted and the findings and analysis are presented and applied to the design of a new system. Details of development documentation, results and conclusion show how the project has progressed from the original research and case studies.
