Project Title: Web-based System to Provide Touristic Planning Advice for Kenya Student: Rupali Shah Course: BSc Hons in E-commerce and Digital Business Abstract: This dissertation aims to create a web based system that would be able to provide information to people travelling to a different country. I have chosen Kenya as a particular country to focus on. The number of websites now available for tourists is immense; however the number of websites that focus on just one country and being able to provide a sufficient amount of information is a much lower figure. Kenya is an upcoming country and is becoming an increasingly popular touristic destination but existing websites have only focused on certain locations within Kenya that they are promoting to tourists. I have taken this into consideration and decided to try and create a more time efficient website for my dissertation that would allow users to be able find information on various other destinations, other than the main attractions, within Kenya easily, be able to view images from a picture gallery, be able to search items with the aid of Google and be able to view their own location within the country or a location of interest. Another major part of my dissertation involved creating a login system where the user is allowed to create, edit and delete schedules of what they plan on doing in the country or have already carried out in the past which get automatically saved and allows them to come back to them later. The availability and ability for a traveller to be able to save schedules of where they have been or plan to go within the country and the activities they did or are planning on doing helps keep track of their trips with specific details. The final major part of my dissertation involved creating a visitor feedback page whereby users can submit information on what they think about the website and ways of improving the website which gets saved in a database. I will begin my dissertation with an analysis of the problem at hand and reviewing existing similar websites to be able to make the gap for improvement more clear. I will also try to point out the advantages and disadvantages of using current websites to various users. I will then go on to mention the design stage of my project during which I have kept the potential types of users greatly in mind. The design stage will involve creating initial versions of various web pages, information required for creating databases and what the uses of the database shall be and the overall layout of the website itself. The design phase allowed the problem of creating a website and the functionalities needed to be broken down into smaller problems making it easier to solve. The implementation stage consists of writing up code and bringing to life some of the designs and layouts that were created during the designing phase of the website. The importance of testing my website is followed towards the end of the report. Here, various tests were carried out. Problems that I came across during implementation and testing are mentioned and how I came round to solving these problems. And finally, in conclusion, this report states how effective my dissertation has been in meeting the specification and mentions areas for improvement and what could be done in the future to make it better. This section also briefly discusses where a few of my ideas for the website were drawn from.
