Project Title: Web Services for Workforce Constraint Validation (Hospitality) Student: James Key Course: MSc in Computer Science Abstract: Managing the workforce in any industry can be challenging, from meeting deadlines, to reliability, and overcoming unforeseen obstacles such as illness, or budget. Such a system is not novel, but there is an ever increasing need, for those that still commit to managing staff via individual contact, and documenting via written rota's and documents that aren't easily made available to everyone who needs them. This system will primarily be a web application. It will build an hierarchy of departments and users, and allow a company manager to model the company. It shall allow base users to view information outside the workplace, while management will be able to utilise staff scheduling through a constraint validator, to optimize effciency by blocking, or warning, of potentially invalid shifts, which violate predefined rules. It is hoped that this project shall contribute to awareness that when considering potential constraints for workplace scheduling, the types of rules required may be specific to the field, and that one model cannot be made to fit all scenarios completely. The system shall demonstrate the specific dilierences with respect to the hospitality industry, with experience in catering.
