This is the homepage for the first/second year CS&IT optional module G5AHOC - History of Computers and Computing.  The module aims to provide an understanding of the main developments in the history of computers and computing, looking at some of the most influential inventions, people and theory driving computer science.

Please note that this module is neither suitable for nor available to final year students

There will be two lectures per week, Mondays at 11.00pm in LT1 and Wednesday at 11.00pm in C3, both in the Central Teaching Facility. Lectures will be supported by videos and occasional demonstrations. Short summaries and PDF versions of all the lecture notes, along with links to useful supplementary materials can be found on the Lectures page.

Each lecture will end with suggestions for things you can read, do or find out about on your own. These are listed separated under Things to Do and Think About. While these exercises will not be directly assessed I reserve the right to assume you have worked through them when setting the examination.

Coursework will account for 25% of the marks for the module, with an unseen examination covering the remaining 75%. Details of this year' coursework are available on the Assessment page, along with links to past exam papers.

If you have any questions about the module, feel free to contact me.
